Lot#: 186

DESCRIPTION: APW - Waltham, Dennison, Howard & Davis, 7J, 18S, heavy and rare 20K gold original HC with eagle hallmark and “B” marking in cameo, case front with engraving of a dog, rear with flowers, gold cuvette engraved “Frank G. Phipps 1860-1897 Frank G. Phipps Barnes,” white enamel SS dial with colorless but legible remains of a “Tracy Baker & Co, Waltham” signature, KWKS, gilt mvt, s#4198. Gross weight of assembled watch 100.3 dwt (156.0 g). The heavy early 20K gold case of this example is quite rare as the very high majority of this grade were cased originally in silver, and as American cases marked in excess of 18K content are quite rare. The dial of this example is also quite interesting with its faint trace of a Tracy Baker & Co. signature as this was the initial name of the Waltham operation following the auction of the Boston Watch Company. This Tracy Baker & Co. name was only used for a very brief period (May - June, 1857) before the firm was renamed Appleton Tracy & Co. and it is likely that this example’s dial signature was erased due to a desire following the name change to use up a remaining stock of Tracy Baker marked dials. CONDITION: Mvt: Running after a twist to start...
CONDITION: Mvt: Running after a twist to start, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, good gilt tone, spot above s#, fine scratch near case screw; dial with patched chip between 7 and 8, some scattered hls; excellent hands; case shows light wear, no dents or dings, engraving detail with mild reduction; tight bow, replacement push is brass and shows medium wear; clean plastic crystal.
ESTIMATE: $3600 - $5800
